To ski in Spain is not what most people think of when considering this country as a holiday - they immediately think of sun, sand, and breaks at beautiful beach resorts! You may be surprised to learn that as well as being Europe’s number one beach holiday resort, it also plays host to Europe’s most southerly ski resort in the Sierra Nevada mountains!!
Why ski in Spain? Not only is it the most southerly ski resort in the continent, but the village is also one of the highest at 2150 metres and it is undoubtedly the most sunny; so don’t forget some sun tan lotion!
Because of the high temperatures and its southerly climate, to ensure against a lack of snow, Sierra Nevada has a third generation snow-making system which covers the entire resort, thanks to 200 individual snow cannons! A true sight to behold when in full operation.
It is a good sized resort, with 45 runs totalling 61km of piste. There is enough to keep everyone happy, and whilst beginners will be pleased by the well groomed greens and blues on offer, the resort is probably best suited for skiers at an intermediate level as it has some excellent long reds, including an incredible 6.5km run all the way from the summit of Veleta mountain at 3398m down to the village at 2,150m. Advanced skiers are not forgotten and will find some good challenges, not least a men’s downhill world cup run.
Don't want to ski in Spain? Away from the slopes there is plenty to do. If you want a break from the sun, there are saunas, a gym and plenty of shopping, while those looking for a less energetic way to catch some rays may like a sleigh ride or a leisurely mountain walk.
The après ski is lively and typically Spanish - that means partying well into the early hours. There are 30 restaurants to choose from as well as plenty of bars and clubs to party in for those with the energy to do so!
